Bronze Ancient Roman Provincial Coins
Many regions of the world already had their own currency in ancient Roman times. There were a number of coins minted by provinces within the empire referred to as Provincial coins. These coins were minted by provinces that had been taken by the Roman empire. While they were Roman currency they were not official empire minted currency. As the Roman empire expanded Roman Provincial coins were often a continuation of the local currency prior to being taken over by the Roman empire. These coins were issued in bronze and silver but never gold. Most of these coins were bronze because the silver coinage was controlled by Rome and not the local civic authorities.
